Oh hey, it's me! Dropping some truth bombs for your Monday. 🎤
I follow a fair amount of photographers. It keeps me motivated and helps me to continue to grow. Some of them are brutally honest about their prices, their policies, etc.. and some are all rainbows and butterflies. I find myself somewhere in between. I don't usually post the brutally honest business side for fear of scaring off potential clients. But, I've learned the hard lesson of boundaries, time and time again. I've come to the realization that the ones who want things for free, or discounted, or are only interested in model calls, the ones who don't value my time, the ones who say my prices are too high but hire someone else at similar rates.... these are not my clients.
Truth is, I am no longer a "hobbyist". I have been an on- record, paying taxes to the man, business for over a year and a half. I used to say yes to every job or client that was thrown my way. Now, I take the shoots that feed my soul.
When I do a model call, I have a specific vision in mind. These shoots are for me. Something I want to try, a new location or a new style I want to play around with.
I love what I do. I love it so much I tear up at your reactions to your photos. I whisper excited profanities under my breath during your session. I edit with a plastered on smile. But it is still a business. I pay an overhead, I update my gear, I take courses and workshops to better my craft and I network to keep myself up to speed.
I know I am not everyone's cup of tea. And that's ok. The thing is, I'm so incredibly thankful for the people who do support me. The ones who put their trust in me to freeze their important moments. Every day, I get a little closer to my goals and where I want to be with my business. But it doesn't come without a hustle.💟
