• • Staying active during whatever the fuck this is • My advice? If you want to keep up your regular exercise/fitness/lifting schedule AND are able to ... Great! Keep smashing it! Exercise releases feel good endorphins, but if your stress levels are already sky-high, it might be best to back-off on the workouts. Listen to your body and act accordingly. I've made the choice to continue doing what I can with what I have at home, but the drive and motivation that I get from going to the gym isn't the same. It's much easier to bail out from a set of bicep curls and go and have another cuppa, more food and watch one more episode of Love Island. Yesterday was the first time I'd gone for a walk in nearly a week. Simply because I haven't had the interest. As much as I'm making this post about ME, I'm trying to help YOU check in with yourself and your feelings around fitness, food and exercise right now. There's a lot of home workouts going around, but that doesn't mean you have to be doing them. Don't allow anything or anyone to make you feel guilty. Having said all that, if you ARE wanting to stay active and fit, hit me up if you'd like a program you can do in the comfort of your own home. Funny/impactful experience in Central Park today➡️ A lady was watching me train my client @juststevematos on some locomotion basics. She goes “what are y’all training for?” I say immediately (without really thinking about it) “Life”. And she replies “no, really...😒” I guess I may have come off as sarcastic😅, so I reinforced my earlier response. “No really” I said. “We’re training for life. Our lifestyle in this day-in-age has come to a point where if we want to travel from point A to point B, it’s either walking along a flat, hard, even surface, or in a car, or we can just sit and do nothing at all-as most office type workers do.” I said “you see ma’am, the human body wasn’t meant to move so one dimensionally. What happens if you find yourself in a situation where you need to cross uneven terrain, such as a rock path through a stream? Or if there’s something in your way that you need to climb over? Our bodies are built to move in those ways, and we need to make sure we’re ready.” Her face after I said that was priceless. Not because I just roasted her or whatever, but because what I was saying clicked, and all of a sudden the silly crawling that she saw my client doing became something she realized she was missing out on. ⬇️ I train myself and my clients the way that I do for two reasons: 1) functionality, and 2) because I can’t ignore the endless possibilities that our physical instruments are capable of. Who wants to be better at running 🙋🏽‍♀️ Over a year ago I hated running on a treadmill.. I mean HATE. I only ran outdoors on the weekend in the summer time and 3 miles at the most. Until last year.. I volunteered at @lifetime.life Indoor Tri and was SO INSPIRED by every athlete, of all fitness levels, conquering the treadmill. In that moment I made a commitment to run 30 minutes on the weekend on a treadmill. I didn’t go fast and I didn’t care about mileage. Giving myself a timeline was all that mattered to me mentally. And OF COURSE it was always worth it when it was over. Since then I’ve built my tolerance up to 5 miles on Saturday’s & Sunday’s whether on a treadmill or outside. If you would have told me a year ago I’d run 5 miles on a treadmill I would have laughed in your face. Running is.... scary, hard, draining, fulfilling, satisfying, & rewarding. I want you to take steps to conquering this barrier. Meal prep on a shoestring....Please read and swipe through for hacks. ———- Let’s face it, competition prep is expensive and bodybuilding nutrition and even just simple healthy eating can be, too. But there are ways to minimize the financial impact of this current pandemic and still eat well! I’m grateful for the human ability to adapt (if we so choose, that is!) So... 1) no time to prep? Pick a day and spend a few hours that will save you time during the rest of the week. No, it won’t go bad. Freeze half the prepped meals. 2) buy mostly real foods (aka not ALL shakes, bars, protein this and that, gluten free this and that unless you truly need it) then supplement only what you need or love from EDUCATED local nutrition shops: they will not up sell you! @undisputed_nutrition @java_supps @mass_muscle_nutrition 3) Peel your own damn carrots, grate cheese instead of buying shredded, grind and pour over or French press your own coffee (kcups are expensive and wasteful) and treat yourself to a cup out front one time time, cut the broccoli tops to cook and chop the stems and toss them in your salad, etc. you get the point. 4) Never throw out leftovers or veggies your kids didn’t eat or anything on the verge of going bad...I turn it into something else: a plant-based stir fry veggie melange supplemented with more expensive fake chicken because well, I can afford it if I take the other shortcuts, pot pie or Shepard’s for the kids, etc. 5) avoid gimmick foods and stick to Whole Foods such as the egg (the perfect protein package) or whole grains and healthier carbs such as barley, brown rice, and sweet potatoes versus amped up low sugar, low sodium, fiber-added bagels and breads. Cheaper, purer and easy to measure out. 6) keep a pantry and supplement meals with canned goods if needed (it is the apocalypse 🤷‍♀️). Get creative. I add canned beets to salad for a sweet touch. 7) buy generic. Who cares? It’s still nutrition without the upscale label. Also, eating organic is awesome but I can’t afford it.
