Let me share the science behind this ... The notion of “two minds” is not just a psychological experience, it is an actual physiological reality. One of the “minds” is actually the brain stem/limbic part of your brain whose SOLE job is to look out for danger and initiate full blown responses to that danger. The hormones and chemicals released can override all higher cognative thought when it about your survival. Doesn't that sound nice, your own personal, highly trained, trigger happy security guard? Great! Well, good if you continue to be in dangerous situations, but not so great, if your difficulty has ended, but your brain and body haven't got the memo. This is the very nature of Trauma. The traumatic experience and the stress that follows REWIRE your brain to be on guard at all times to avoid anything like that again. On one hand, its an important part of you to have, but on the other hand, it can be a real pain in the a$$ if you're seriously trying to move beyond your traumatic past.
The other, "mind" is your conscious self that is "noticing" that you have this other side to you and is always calling you to a bigger purpose in life. It is the real you that has to figure out how to live with this part of your brain that is necessary, but needs retraining. You are more than your stress reactions, which are drenched in fear, doubt, and anger, that your limbic brain is SUPPOSED to be like that and that you can learn a new way to not just survive, but to thrive is the most important first step. People who overcome traumatic stress, understand this fact as a foundation for all self-care activities. We don't take long walks, listen to grounding music, eat well, sleep more, work at relationships and continue to put ourselves "out there" because it FEELS nice... often it doesn't. We do it because we know its how to retrain our brain and set the foundation for simply feeling at ease moment to moment. #naturopath#stress#stresscoach#nervous system#trauma#quietyourmind#meditation#chronicillness#coronavirus#healthcoach#traumainformedyoga#stayhome#stressrelief#mindfulnessmeditation#immunity#anxiety#untetheredsoul#ACES
