In light of the recent coronavirus outbreak, a total of 236,921 cases and 10,000 deaths have been reported worldwide. Italy is the second largest country to be impacted with almost 40,000 cases. The level of severity has reached a point where Italian citizens must be quarantined and remain within their homes. With this quarantine in place, there has been a vast improvement in the natural environment due to the lack of human activity.
The Grand Canal, one of Venice’s primary sources of transportation, has undergone a major transformation due to its recent vacant nature. The boats disturbed the water by not allowing the sediments to settle at the bottom of the canals. However, the lack of boat traffic has led to a noticeable difference in water clarity and some say quality as well.
Additionally, with reduced air activity and production, there have been reports of air quality improvements as well! Although these positive improvements are due to temporary halts, it is clear that we must take the environment into consideration even more when building infrastructure.
